It's rarely "just a delivery."
Sometimes it's a document holding up a closing. A package someone promised would be there. Something a customer, coworker or client is waiting for. And when it doesn't arrive, they're probably not blaming the courier. They're calling you. That's why we've always believed: There's more riding on a delivery than the delivery itself. Your reputation often travels with it.

As we have all been hearing.
Beginning this Friday night, September 11, southbound I-5 through Portland’s Rose Quarter will close around the clock for up to five weeks. Based on some of the more dire predictions, you might want to cancel your appointments, stock up on provisions and avoid leaving your house until sometime in mid-October. I don’t think we’re quite there yet. Will the closure create traffic problems? Absolutely. Do any of us know exactly how bad they will be, where the worst backups will develop or what will happen when thousands of Portland drivers simultaneously discover the same “secret” alternate route? Not yet. Here’s what we do know:
So yes, we have a plan. Despite what the accompanying photo may suggest, it does not involve staring at a map in panic. (Well, maybe a little.) We will build additional time into affected deliveries, adjust routes and driver positioning, monitor traffic throughout the day and respond as the actual patterns develop. The honest answer is that the first few days will tell us much more than any forecast can. We are preparing for serious disruption without pretending we know exactly what it will look like before it happens. Most importantly, we will continue monitoring every delivery from pickup through completion. If traffic threatens a promised delivery time, we will contact you proactively rather than leave you wondering where your delivery is. We cannot control Portland traffic. We can control how carefully we prepare, how closely we monitor every delivery and how quickly we adapt when the situation changes. We’re ready—and if conditions require a different plan, we’ll be ready to make that change too. And like a lot of people, we're looking forward to three days without an alarm clock, Portland traffic, or wondering about next week's I-5 closure. Don't worry, we have a plan — but more on that next week. Before all that happens and we shut things down for the weekend, there's something worth remembering. Almost every business exists because somebody else is trying to get their work done. Our clients aren't really buying deliveries from us.
Our job is simply to make sure the delivery part of their day isn't something they have to worry about. That's a responsibility we take seriously. But this weekend, we're going to take Labor Day a little more literally and enjoy a few days away from work along with everyone else. We hope you get the chance to do the same. Have a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend from Bill, Stacey, and the entire On-Time Delivery crew! |
